About Memory Loss

As we age, our memory changes.  These changes result from both the normal aging process and disease.

As we age, we change.  These changes affect our brain as well as our body.  Most of us are aware of the bodily changes, such as reduced muscle mass, diminished perceptual abilities, diminished immune systems, and the like.  Although many of us are aware that brain functions change as we age, most of us have a poor understanding of those changes.  Here, we will discuss the brain function changes that are specifically related to memory.

Memory loss can result from both the normal aging process and disease.  When memory loss results from disease we call the syndrome dementia.  There are many types of dementias, and each of these types has their own risk factors.

Fortunately, there are treatments available that can slow the course of  some of these dementias.  These treatments are most effective when the dementia is identified in its earliest stages.  However, most people do not notice the subtle changes in their memory during the early stages of dementia.  That is why it is a good practice for those over 55 to have a trained professional monitor their memory functioning periodically.
