Why Assess Your Memory New treatments offer new hope. Disease related memory loss (termed dementia) can have a profound effect on the lives of those with the disease, their family, and their friends. It was not long ago that the medical community could offer little hope to those who were diagnosed with dementia. Several drugs, however, now provide hope of a longer and healthier life to those who are diagnosed with dementia. Although these drugs can significantly slow the progression of the disease, they cannot reverse the effects of the disease. To obtain maximum benefit from these drugs, it is therefore critical to identify the presence of a dementia in its early stages. Unfortunately, the Surgeon General reports that only 3% of those with mild memory impairment and less than 25% of those with moderate to severe memory impairment will be detected by their physicians (Report to the Surgeon General, 1999). This low detection rate is alarming, but understandable. The detection of small, abnormal memory changes takes both time and specialized training. Often physicians have neither the time nor the training to detect small, abnormal memory changes. MARS was formed to provide our community the most sensitive, valid, and reliable memory assessments available. Our goal is to determine if you now have or are likely to develop in the future some form of memory problem and direct you to effective treatment. If you suspect that you or a loved one may have a memory problem, come in and get tested. If a disease is present, early detection can lead to a longer and healthier life. If no disease is present, our testing will allow you to walk away with the peace of mind that experts are monitoring your memory functioning. If you are 55 or older and do not suspect that you have a memory problem, come in and get tested to provide a record of your normal memory functioning. This record will allow us to detect changes in your memory functioning earlier and with more precision than would be possible without this record. |
